2003/04 season to remember
photos thanks to Lupes

*sigh*

I'm missing short track season already. I certainly can't even express how much fun I have at these competitions. It's like tunel vision, and for that weekend I'm blissed out on my good friends and watching Apolo & team USA do their 'thang'. Getting to know this short track world from the outside in has been such an experience for me. Just to be a part of the loyal supporters of these olympians has been more than an honor for me. And giving back to them is my pleasure, and only fuels my excitement for the future and what it holds.

Caroline and Apolo chatting as they received their medals for overall US champs

I'm so glad that now I've aquired a "3-D" view of the short track community that puts perspective on things that would otherwise be sketchy. I appreciate how open and candid that Apolo, Rusty, Bridie, and Caroline have been with me and others in these fast-flying 2 years. The more I attend Cups, the more I learn to understand the 'mind of an olympic athlete', and at it's worst it stumps me - at best, it fascinates me. The tempers, the passion, the outbursts of emotion...and no, that's not the fans I'm talking about. Athletes are just fascinating human beings that have an extra special physical talent as well as a glow that can't be matched or explained.

Apolo and Rusty on the podium after putting on a highly intense 'battle' on the ice

The ST fans were amazing that weekend, and I can't thank everyone enough for helping ST Gear get off to a great start. I'm a weird one, in that I have trouble knowing just how to accept compliments, mainly because I get my kicks from watching others enjoy themselves through my work, rather than being recognized myself. That's definitely what it's all about.

Ape, Molly, and Lupe at the rink-side action

Fun is trying to see what it would be like to actually stand on a podium. The hell with it, after the medal ceremony we jumped on the ice and hit that old thing that was damn near a death trap with it's warped levels and carpet tuffs sticking out all over the place. We enjoyed a little photo op, some bows and kisses blown, and some paparazzi if I'm not mistaken. With Apolo poster and Magazine in hand, we made fools of ourselves and had the best time doing it.

Jennie, Lupes, Molly, and Ape on the podium baby!

I talked with enough east coast skating clubs that weekend to know that they'll be waiting on the horn for ST Gear to make it's mark. It's uniting fans in a tangible way, and watching Sooz and Kimo flash gang signs at each other while sporting their hoodies proves how important everyone is in the big picture. As we step closer to Tornio, I hope to fan the flame of short track enthusiasm, with these two crazies below as my floor models.

Sooz and Kimo scaring the masses at our Oscar night party

Although, I admit, nothing trilled me like seeing Apolo wearing the black hoodie, and telling me how much he loved it. Hell, I expected nothing out of that fateful 'hoodie toss' from the stands to him on the ice. He could have taking it home to Seattle on his break and buffed the chrome rims of his Lexus LX 470 with it for all I knew, but in the back of my mind I had a hunch he'd dig it...even if only a little.

Well, according to my eye in the sky spy from Sweden, it was more than a little. He was spotted wearing the hoodie 3 different times on three different days. Nearly swallowed my tongue when I heard that. I sent him a letter breaking down the whole ST Gear thing, since I didn't tell him much in Cleveland other than "Yeah, I made this..."

I have yet to get a hoodie to Shani, but he's next on the list.

Lupes, Ape, and Molla yet again kickin' it in VIP

It'll be a busy off season for short track fans

One Rockin' Weekend

Well, I always know that I'm in for good times when I visit Lupes and Molla, and if the visit is for longer than a day - it could spell t-r-o-u-b-l-e.

I love it because with us, we're easily amused. No agenda, just maybe the guideline of trying not to laugh our asses off TOO much. We went out to dinner Friday to Red Lobster with Molly's cousin Dani. The night was never short of excitement, between having drinks spilled all over us, to watching people out in public in clothing that made you wish you were the fashion police.

Molly discovered that using utencils to eat was so outdated, and frankly, it's just flat boring. Thanks to the aid of Dani's meal, which was crab legs, molls gave herself a claw to spear her food. Once the waitress saw Dani with crab legs coming out her mouth like fangs, it was pretty much all over for us.

Straight from being drentched in shirley temples to being drentched in techno lighting, we hit the midnight bowl-a-thon from 12-3am. It's official: my friend=awesome, my bowling average=much-less-than-awesome.

Molly kicked our asses, and did an 80's dance to "I wonder if I take you home" in our faces to boot.

Saturday was the "surprise" dinner in Long Beach at L'Opera. Italian food to die for, or desserts that would finish you off if the meal did not. Thank you SO much to Mel and Kelly for coming, it made the dinner extra-special :) We ate, we laughed, we passed the cameras around, and talked about Vegas. And yes, Kelly, renting a hummer in some obnoxious yellow would be perfect to roll into the world cup.

The whole weekend was just awesome, because Lord knows the best ones are those that you don't plan - you just do. I would have to one of my favorite moments was Sunday afternoon, in Redondo Beach at Ruby's. Give me, Lupes, and Molls good food, some milkshakes, and a view of the ocean and we're not coming out any time soon. I think Molly said it best on her blog that our friendship goes way beyond the short track/Apolo thing. It is, and was initially our common bond, but more and more we're finding that another common bond is insanity. I love my cali girls with all my heart, and I'm more than blessed to have them apart of my daily life.

If that crazy Apolo didn't do anything else, he did bring me some amazing friends.

Bumpin' in the Streets of LA

So, here in Los Angeles, visiting the Molla for her birfday. I drove half the way up to central california and met up with Lupes, and then we drove the rest of the way and made it to LA at about midnight.

We're kickin it at the house, watching movies, eating junk, and gossiping our way into the weekend. I'll take some pics of us crazies tonight and post them up.

I'm just patiently waiting to regain full use of my right nostril and ear, no thanks to this damn cold.

I survived horizontal rain on my drive to southern cali, but the weather is beau-ti-ful here in the city of angels :)

*grown*

I have a cold that's trying to kill me. It's actually settled in my ear, and I not only can't hear a damn thing but I couldn't sleep last night from the pain.

And I have a double shift tomorrow at work. I can't afford to get sick. I'm pumping this body full of as many pills/liquid drugs as I can handle, because I have too much to do to slow down.

Well, I've been in a walking coma all day...and the only thing that gave me a boost?

Jennie's Apolo pictures are up, and they are out-of-this-world. Jenn, I'm so glad we have someone like you to truly capture his hottness on a digital still. *phew* I'm still sweatin'.

World Championship reflections

Well, all I really have to say about this competition is that what was supposed to be the best of the season turned so sour. The number of injured skaters and foul play was beyond mind blowing.

It just looks like a never-ending up hill battle to overtake the Korean team, with it's machines and tricks. If USS or ISU don't get a handle on shit like this competition was unfortunate to witness, then it's threatening to kill the integrity of this awesome sport.

+ not enough funds/resources to send a full, able-bodied team to competions
+ not being able to attend all competitions
+ putting skaters careers/lives on the line, simply as a result of negligence

I'm like, beside myself over this weekend's fiasco. I've never HEARD of so many skaters being sent to the hospital over the course of one meet, and as the news came in, my stomach just sank.

And the crazy, but not unbelievable, show of "team skating" and "targeting" that the Koreans pulled off was an outrage and only dishonors anything they're attempting to accomplish in short track. It's naive to think that every Korean skater has a hidden agenda, but if even ONE skater is allowed to get away with what they did this weekend, it reflect so poorly on the team as a whole.

Just thank GOD the US team will be on a plane tomorrow for home, and can get the hell out of that mess they called a World Championship.

I think Noelle said it best....
"It's like there is a black cloud hanging over this competition, and over this whole season. I can't wait till both are history."

A safe flight home to all those of you returning from Sweden. I hope there was some happiness out of the trip.

Rusty, We Love ya

Man, it's been a mood of melancholy since I heard the news about Rusty's injury. Just praying that he's going to recover quickly.

Also hoping that he's not too pissed right about now, knowing him he's probably mad as hell that he can't be out on the ice. That boy would skate with or without a nose if it were up to him. Talking to him in Cleveland (on the looooong car ride to the airport) he seemed really anxious to make a big impression at Worlds. *sigh* I hate it when things beyond your control just happen to bite you in the ass at the most inopportune time.

Thanks Lupes for posting that awesome pic of you and Rus at the Utah Oval last year - brings back good memories.

Would just love to give him a big hug right about now.

*Sending Prayers to Sweden*

Oppsie-san

I've been sitting here busting a gut laughing at this site dedicated to Japanese product labels. They've attempted to post them in english, but to say something's lost in the translation would be an understatement. Now these are real products, mind you, no photoshop here.

Here's a few winners from the snacks section *still laughing*

I always knew that surfing the net would get me in trouble. And exhibit A below is no expection.

Extended Rules of Speedskating - according to Ape

1. What goes fast, must slow down.
2. If you've reached the olympics rings, you've gone too far.

and 3....

Now you see the skinsuit...

...and now you *gulp* don't.

What the...?

Yeah. That's what I said.

No, wait. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

Ooooh Aaaaaaanton, where you at?

Gettin'-it-together Friday

I'm completely renovating a section in my room for files, paperwork, and other important things concerning the new baby, lol.

I refuse to have my whole weekend eaten up by "spring cleaning", so I'm on a mad dash to finish it tonight. Yeah, that's me. I get on a roll, and I don't quit til the task is finished.

May spend a good portion of time at the post office, mailing more hoodies off. Thanks so much for your payment, girly, I'll be mailing your ST Gear Goodness to you before noon tomorrow ;)

I missed a run to Starbucks. No wonder I'm dragging myself across the floor today.

New Layout

I'm feelin' the Apolo Love, since he's away at Worlds, so I decided to give the blog a face lift accordingly.

Ok, now is it just me (which I hardly doubt), or does any other of you Short Track Stalker Elites have the Christmas tune "Do you see what I see..?" in your head when you look at this:

HOLY FREAKIN' MOTHER OF THE NEW TESTAMENT.

I am officially rendered a babbling ass.

Unfreakin'believable.

Ok, stoled this from Yano, who in turn, stoled it from someone else...

If You Call Me...

if you call me lil ape, then you're someone from my internet world or my childhood

if you call me Rachel, you're the idiots at my work that NEVER get my name right...and it's been how many years?

if you call me Maple, then you're either Darla or Janelle

if you call me Ms. April, then you're one of the pesky preschoolers that I teach

if you call me Ape/Apey, then you're either a close friend or Joanna (which is also a close friend, but she's the only one that calls me Apey, lol)

if you call me Beeky, then you're my father that really needs to remember that I hate that name

if you call me Apple, then you're my grandmother (R.I.P) Love you, Miss you.

if you call me Apeycakes, then you're *sigh* my mom. Mom, you're a nut.

if you call me Shirshmack/Shortstack, then you're an annoying pain in ass from high school or college

if you call me Shelly (my middle name is Michele), then you're my uncle John

if you call me Aprile, then you're my friend Jimmy tryin' to show his Italian skills

if you call me Eggroll/Eggnog, then you're my not-all-there younger sister

if you call me Pampril, then you are my long-time friend, Justin (I'll still get him back for that nickname, someday)

if you call me April Michele Shirshac, then I know whoever you are, you're quite pissed

and finally...

if you call me April, then Lord help you that you don't discover any of my nicknames

I think I'm beginning to love being preoccupied with things I have to do for this, because it just makes my work day fly by.

I was running around early this morning getting things done, mailing things, emailing things. Speaking of which, Tiasha, I received your payment yesterday and I will be shipping you your ST Gear hoodie tomorrow before work ;)

I spent a few hours at my local second home, working on website building and filling out the state forms for my business license and seller's permit. Quinn was working today, and somehow we got on the discussion of what I was working on so intently. I don't think (well, from the look on his face) that he's familiar with short track, but he did grow up ice skating on frozen ponds back in his native upstate New York. "Close enough" I said.

I told him that I should buy stock in Starbucks for as much as I'm there, and with that he whips out a grande cup and says, "well, your usual (Grande, 2 pump, Caramel frappacino, with whip and a caramel smiley face on top) is coming up, and it's on the house."

Whoa? Sweet. Hey, I can't resist a man that just throws his coffee at me.

Going to get my drink, I noticed that Ednil is Partner of the Month at our little humble Starbucks. There's a plaque by the bar with his name, and a polariod picture of him plastered on that was cut into a heart. I joked with him that he's the one that cut his own photo. He proceed to hurl a coffee bean at me.

There's a whole new way of flirting, one coffee bean at a time. Yeah, I'm pathetic.

Janelle lookin' schnazzy on her birfday

I took my friend Janelle out afterwards for her birthday today. She turns the big 2-3. Ok, that's not that old, but in dog years, damn. That's ancient. Janelle can sing like a bird, and is always writing songs but forgetting them the minute she dreams them up. So, to remedy this problem, I bought her some ginko baloba, *snicker*, eh, more like a voice recorder so she can finally snatch those tunes in her head. Anyhoo, Happy Birthday Nellie!

Man, it's only Tuesday and I can't figure out why I'm so restless.

A Momentary Distraction

Now, before you look downcast at me, thinking "Ape, you plagiarising bitty, you!", listen here.

I realize that I am indefinitely using the title of a certain Polak's blog as my intro, but guess what?

she don't own the phrase.

Aye, she may be the reigning queen of the "Momentary Distraction", but that does not give her royal ass ownership of such a nifty little phrase.

And besides, when I show you the snapshot that has just recently become my Momentary Distraction, you'll put down that phone to the Better Business bureau and thank me later.

Forgive me for the spitting, drooling, moans and groans, and possibly touching of one's "self" due to this photo. *Ahem* Not that I've actually done any of the above, but that's just fair warning, nevertheless. Now, in all honesty, I'm not sure how "momentary" this distraction may be, but I'm guessin' it's going to be a while. Lupe, GOD BLESS your frickin' off-the-hook camera skillz. I'm like, in awe, seriously.

So....is anyone sweating, or is it just me?

Dammit, Ohno....you sexy bastard.

Week Sum-up: Look what the cat drug in

What a rough week.

Almost 5 days worth of double shifts, and I'm coming in the door trying to remember where I left my sanity. Oh! That's right! It's in the back pocket of the jeans that I was too damn tired to wash.

I've been having reoccuring nightmares of preschoolers poking me and trying to put play-doh in my hair. No, no, no, have you ever had play-doh in your hair?

I've worked with almost ALL women for 5 years, and man....can women bitch, or what? Women just get on my nerves. Trust me, I've tried to run screaming down the street from myself, but to no avail.

Constant drama, gossip, people just stickin' their ass where it doesn't belong.

A great deal, a vast majority, a good sum of the children I work with are the sweetest, funniest little buggers ever. The ones that ask those favorite questions like "I wonder if fish fart?" or "Donde esta me lapiz?"

Alas, I have discovered (farly quickly in my teaching career) that some children are just plain demons. That's it, PO-SESSED of the devil. The exorcist has NADA on these winners. It's funny how one would attempt to understand and calculate just what makes these little Spawns the way they are...

and then, you meet the parents.

And all of the sudden, it all hits you like a plowing trackter, and you feel your limbs go numb.

*sigh* I'm just not slick enough, or have enough tact to hold myself together from not wanting to tell these parents where they can stick it. All I say is, you, the general public, have new found respect for your teachers of today. Because teaching ain't what it was...and most of the time, we're raising other people's children.

Oooooooooook, on a much lighter note, I deserve a frappacino dammit. With 4 shots of Crued Oil and topped with ground up sleeping pills.

Yum.

I'll need it for my website itinerary tonight.

And I shall name him...Lunar E. Clipse

Found this on Joanna's blog:

"British Girl named Diot Coke in 1379: Naming your child after a popular soft drink could be seen as a little bit faddish, but the parents of young Diot Coke might be forgiven - they gave their baby daughter the name way back in 1379."

And upon reading this, I couldn't stop laughing at my own similar situation with my preschoolers, and the three fries short of a happy meal parents that name them.

I was filling in for a co-worker today, which means I sub for a new class each day. And I swear to 100 year old Dr. Suess (bless his soul) that I've never seen a class with more whacked up names in my life. I mean, I'm all for unusual names, but it was beyond hilarious today.

One of the girls I brought to the office was named Austria. Yes, like the country. To add insult to...well, insult, I kept tripping up and calling her Australia. A travesty, I know. I couldn't get her name in my head, and after naming off the better part of Northern Europe, I was about ready to stoop to just refering to her as "hey friend."

Other notables were:
Fermin

Ahminah

Aneken

Bristol

You think I'm joking about this? After 5 years of this, I'm cataloging my preschoolers to be called "lil rats #1-200"

Sometimes you just have to laugh at yourself. Yet for me, that would be At All Times laugh at yourself. I would be much less dangerous to flambuoyant parents if I was just behind a cubical where no one gets hurt....and all names could be written on the chalkboard in peace.

Who hit the conveyor belt to LIGHT SPEED?

Yeah, that doesn't make sense to me either. Join the club.

I need to have a planner to organize my planner at this point. Three watches on my wrist would suffice.

I have, yet another, double shift at work tomorrow. Work just gets in the way of life, doesn't it. Now, after my "day job" tomorrow, I have:

1. Update Bridie's site with photos, new developments, create logo for new developments
2. Work on the "athlete bios" section of USSTfans.com, make it up to date
3. Finish the frame work on the ST gear website
4. Decide on a wholesaler, call the screenprinting co. for estimates and quotes
5. Apply for my business license
6. Draft up promotional letter and package for west coast ice rinks
7. Design ST gear letterheads and catalog brochure
8. Set up page for 2 new Zoutou charity auctions
9. Call SLC RMH and get updated status

and finally...fax over resume to "computer job that I want" #1 tomorrow morning before I leave and call up "computer job that I want" #2 on my lunch break and leave message of interest.

Case in point? It's not easy being a procrastinating idiot.

In the words of U2: "The Sweetest Thing"

It really was. I'll never forget Lupes tossing that hoodie over the banister, and watching Apolo say "what's this?" while opening the sweater to read it....

And having Apolo respond to the ST gear hoodie so well was beyond any hopes I could have had. Having him walk down the hallway toward us, point us out, and inform us that he wore his hoodie that day...man. I guess it's a weird, surreal thing that artists/designers feel when you've created something that not only your inspiration is wearing, but proudly at that. This isn't a guy that can't wait to run out of the building, or someone that just can't "stand it" when fans throw him clothing to wear.

He was such a ham once he put on the sweater, it was fabulous.

My misson with ST gear was to finally give the short track fans something that they could sport loud and proud to show their love for this sport, as well as spread the word about ST. We may think we'll never see Short Track on TV, or see it become mainstream, but who's to say we can't try? Apolo and Rusty have won Olympic medals, worked their asses off to be the best and bring some light over to short track. But the more I see these guys in competition, the more I realize that they can't do it alone.

NBA stars are a part of basketball's allure, but it's the fans buying season tickets, sporting their favorite player's jersey, and being supportive...that's what makes a sport successful. Well, ST fans have got it down to a science when it comes to VIP packages and bringing full tanks of support from around the US, but we've been missing out on being "Human Billboards".

Hopefully, not for long.

My feedback from fans has been tremendous if not overwhelming, but the support I received from members of the US team, parents of team members, and a good chunk of east coast speedskating clubs was warming to my heart.

Apolo's never give in attitude has rubbed off on me, and as long as he gives his all for what he loves, I'm going to give my all to short track, and those amazing people that I've met because of it.

The Not-so-quick Rundown on Cleveland :
This is the story, with a few pics mingled in. I have a few shots I'll be putting up on USSTfans.com.

Thrusday, Feb 26, 2004
8:50am

I arrive at the Cleveland-Hopkins airport more tired and jet-lagged than I had ever been going on these short track trips. Lupe's flight was delayed, later cancelled, and she wouldn't be coming until 9pm. Molly was the next best hope, coming at 3pm, but all I could think of was getting to my hotel and passing out. I hailed a cab, and on the way to my hotel, talked with the driver, who I later found was a retired skater! He showed me his skates in the back, and asked for my business card and sites that I run. My stomach churned with anticipation, yet I had a moment of "We miss you, you short track Biatch" silence for Beats.

9:40am

I get to the Holiday Inn, counting the seconds to when I can take a shower, and I see Maria Garcia coming down the elevator getting ready to head for the shuttle to the rink. I call up Kimo letting him know I'm finally in Cleveland, and I meet him and Jan in the lobby and head for the Venue.

10:50am

Make it down to the VIP section after grabbing my pass, and met up with Jennie, Janie, Anita, Tiasha, and Melinda. It was great to see everyone again, who were busy snapping away getting shots of the skaters warming up. The time trials were pretty intense, and the mood was one of focus and concentration.

1:00pm

The races were exciting, feeling the rush of the ice again was beyond words. The VIP section was pretty well filled. I chatted with Jennie about her new "baby", got to hold that massive thing, and then out comes Anton on the ice. None of us could get over how LONG his hair was, and the catch-phrase for him was "Jesus Hair" for the weekend.

5:00pm - 8:00pm

I was waiting for Molls, but at that time a bunch of us had made our way up to the VIP room for the Meet N Greet. Rusty spotted us on the far side of the room. He was apparently starving, and grabbed a whole box of pizza and came over to sit down. He was chatting, and eating, while simultaniously warming down his legs - it was pretty funny. We took a ton of pics, I have a picture with Rusty, but I didn't have my cam at the time (must email Jan for that photo!) We said a few words to Derek, told him we were looking foward to watching him race this weekend, and he thanked us.

9:00pm - 12:00pm

photo by Kimo & JanA ton of us crazies went to the WinterHurst Skating rink in Cleveland Heights, and half the group hit the ice while the others became the cheering section. Molly finally came back with Lupes in toe, her flight delayed all to hell, but she made it in one piece. Again, I think Tiasha has a great pic of us "skaters" making an Olympic Z-team pose, will have to find that. I haven't ice skated in a while, but it was super fun, if not hilarious, skating while our little group cheered as we made it around the corner without bloodshed or losing limbs. Jennie and I were laughing so hard at the musical choices, since it was an organ player goin' at it the whole time. He was doing songs like "Gloria", "The Star Wars Theme", and "My Girl", all on the organ. Now, skating to the sound of an organ is bad enough, but when you could barely name that 80's flashback tune, giggling made it hard to stay up on the skates!

Friday, Feb 27, 2004
11:00am

Since the Elite skaters didn't skate until 6pm, I decided to head out with Sooz and Bridie to have lunch and talk about her site. We had a great time, and Bridie was stunned to see an ad for her site in the Event program. We had lunch at an awesome Italian cafe. Before coming back to the hotel to freshen up, I first had a moment of "Why, Oh, Why do you leave us lonely" silence for Beats.

5:00pm

The first day of competition was in for a packed house. When we arrived, the doors where busting open with spectators, and with our VIP's in hand, we made a B-line to our seats. I took a pic of Molly and Lupe, who along with myself were sporting the ST gear promo hoodies. I handed out tons of flyers, was stopped in the hallways many times with fans and locals asking about the sweatshirts. The Ohio and Chesapeake skating clubs were really lovin' the hoodies, and they were excited for the site to come out.

8:00pm

After the races, we hung around the lobby, as skaters came through. It felt like a "soul train" line, as the skaters walked passed, we'd all yell "WOO HOO". I congratulated Mike Kooreman, who put up his hands in true Rocky fashion, and talked with Shani a bit. This was my first time meeting Shani, and I was pleasently surprised. He was incredibly sweet, welcoming, unassuming, and he is just fabulous with the kids. They were hanging all over him, it was such a sight. A handful of us waited ever so patiently to see if Apolo would stop by. We heard he was finishing drug testing, and would be coming through. He eventually came down to the lobby, and a ton of fans of all ages came up to him. So as not to get in the way of some of these fans getting to see Apolo for the first time, we positioned ourselves right by the exit door, just hoping to say hello.
He spotted us, said hello, and we asked if we could take a quick picture. I had given him a fast hug from "hello" and asked him how he was doing (he didn't, from my observation) seem to be in the best of spirits). He cringed a bit, and honestly said "Eh, I'm doin' alright..." We asked "Ok, picture time" and ran up to Apolo...he got a huge grin and said "Uh Oh!" Kimo was off to the side, and just before the picture was taken he piped up with "Hey, grab his jig!" Apolo, again, gave an embarrased giggle, while us girls tried to "Shh" Kimo.

Saturday, Feb 28, 2004

1:00pm - 5:00pm

By this point, a good handful of us were sporting our ST gear hoodies, and while the men took the ice for the 3000m, we could see Rusty glance over to the VIP's and had a funny grin on his face. We just let loose. The 3000m was so exciting (mostly fueled by the obvious spirit of 'rivalary' going on between Apolo and Rusty), that we barely had voices left. We screamed, we stomped, we did everything by propel each other onto the ice. I could hear Jennie's camera "firing" away, that sucker sounds like an A-K 47. Apolo and Rusty were thisclose in that race, and Apolo put on the jets in the final lap, flying across the finish line with a huge hand clap and a finger for "number one" in the air. After our screams had died down a bit, Apolo swing wide across the rink, and high-fived it to all of the VIP's outstretched hands. When all that beautiful skinsuit-clad ass glided off the rink, I shed a tear and had yet another moment of "It's a crime to witness glory, without you to help share the story" silence for...you guessed it...Beats.

8:00pm

They gave out the awards for that day, and the VIP section was pretty much all that stayed for the long hail of the medals giving out. We were totally livin' the moment. The overhead speakers of the rink were blarring We Are The Champions by Queen, and all of us in the front row were singing it verbatum and giving the officials in the corner a really good laugh. Rusty would look over and crack up, and then walk to the podium and his medal would fall to the ice. It did that 4 times! From the podium, his silver took it's last dive, and he glanced over at us and put up 4 fingers, LOL! Those damn medals. Every skater kept tripping over the little runner that they laid on the ice, and I joked that Apolo should have just leaned back and let his hair be the carpet. Lupe had already seen Apolo coming up the stairs, and had him sign her NIKE poster with "Thanks for the support...Apolo Anton Ohno", which is our awesome new Zoutou auction item. At the end of the ceremony, I knew I had to somehow get my hoodie in Apolo's hands. He was looming below the bleachers by the stairwell, and I motioned to Lupe, "Give him the hoodie, just throw it to him!"

She called for him, and as he looked up, she yelled for him to catch. I jumped from behind Lupes and said "It's for you.." He grabbed the hoodie (again, Tiasha my picture God, has the shot of him reading the sweater and smiling), and said "Thanks!" We left after that, and were told that Apolo asked a few of us that stayed if we were going to be there for the last day of races. Now, I wasn't banking on Apolo even wanting to wear my hoodie. I did think it would be amazing if he decided to wear it for the next day, but it was just getting one to him that made me happy. Crowning Moment: when the podium was empty and the fans began to dispurse, freak shows aka Jennie, Molly, Lupe, and April went up to the podium on the ice and begged the audience for a photo op. "This is the only ****in' time we'll ever set foot on a podium, so what the hell.." the 4 shouted.

10:00pm - 4 in the freakin' am

Amazing days of racing call for amazing parties afterward. After Molly, Lupes, and I stopped at the local Starbucks for some caffeine, gave a quick call to Beats and Joanna respectively, and we made it back to the Hotel bar to celebrate. After a round of drinks, giggles, and stories, the bar kicked us out the door at 1:30am. But, that didn't stop the madness. I think it was about 8 of us that completely took over the west wing of the lobby, and we even ordered room service and had it delievered to the lobby. We were crackin' up, and a few buffallo wings and pizza slices later realized that the races started early the next morning. D'oh! What cho doin'? Nuffin, chillin' at da Holiday Inn..

This day was by far the best. The relays had us losing our voices yet again, and the fun didn't stop after the competition ended. Molly, Lupes, and I (affectionately dubbed "Chunky's Angels") were in the hallway of the Venue Lobby and we ran into Caroline's Mother, Joanne. We had a super talk with her about the fan's role, and what it's like being short track supporters. Caroline snuck over to ask her mother a question, and we proceeded to shower her with compliments on her skating that day. Caroline is such a sweetheart, totally won us over that day. We assured her that Short track fans are nothing to be afraid of, as long as we're fed and get plenty of sleep at the best hotels. She was surprised when we asked to take a photo with her, and at the moment her humbleness really hit me. She's a tremendous talent, and was very derserving of our attention.

Crowning Moment: II

As we finished up our convo with Caroline, we noticed out of the corner of our eye, Hark! A sexy-bad-ass hunka burnin' speedskater, who usually answers to Apolo, was making his way down the hallway. He spotted us three with our ST gear craziness on, and he stops, points, and says "Hey, I wore that sweater today!" Jigga wha? I couldn't even push words out with my tongue. "You did?" I'm pretty sure Molly and I both said in unison.

"When?"

"I wore it during warm-ups this morning..." He told us.

"AHhHH, well why aren't cha wearin' it now, we should get a picture of all of us with our sweaters!" Apolo said yes, and that he needed to grab his skates first. Jennie came running up to me from the lobby all excited, and yelled "April, Apolo's wearing your sweater!" We all made our way in the packed lobby, and there he was...

He was practically doing a runway show down the lobby, Tiasha told us that everyone asked him to "pose" with the sweater...and boy did he. When I came up to him, I squealed "You're wearin' it! Do you like it?"

"I love it!" He says, rubbing the logo on the front. "This design...these...these are really cool!" As we went up to form for the picture, Apolo was smiling and talking to us out of the corner of his mouth, and said "It smells like a girl."

"What, the sweater?" I asked. He giggled, and confirmed.

"Well, it was in my bag mixed with my sweater, too....I promise, next hoodie won't smell like a girl."

"Nah, it's ok...it smells good, I was just wondering..." He says with a smirk.

Then, out of the blue (this picture took forever to take, I guess) Apolo looks down, and sees Molly's Samoa Adidas shoes and says, and I kid you not - "I like those shoes, those are hot. They're pink!" Molly was crackin' up, I think said to him "Ah, you like those?" and under her breath secretly vowing to never remove those shoes...EVER.

Just before he left the rink, he turned and give us three big hugs, I told him it was really great to see him again, and the words "It's good to see you too, thanks for coming..." was enough to send Molls, Lupes, and I onto a cloud that was too high to even catagorize by number. It's the little stuff that makes the trip special.

And the final kicker?

Well, let's just say that thank God for certain bronze medalists that just happen to need rides to the airport. Rusty saw us in the lobby and was asking Jack Mortell if he could drive him to the airport...as Jack studdered a bit, Lupe says "We'll give you a ride...we have a rental!" Rusty checks to see if we're serious, then tells Jack, "That's ok, I have a ride." It was awesome, I mean, taking Mr. 500m to the airport, I tried everything...asking if he needed help with his bag, his skates, his jig, his a----ok, so basically he was perfectly self contained. I told him a rundown of the new ST gear product line and website, and he was really trippin' over it. "I love those sweaters!" he tolds us. "I kept looking over at the VIP section, seeing you three wearing it, and wondering what it said. I didn't want to, like, stare or anything, but I was very curious..." It was an hilarious ride to the airport, Molly and Rusty fighting not only over directions through cleveland, but over who's more ghetto when it comes to LA. Rusty was feeling a bit outnumbered, with Lupe, myself, and Melinda in the back, and played a trick on Molly. At one stop light, he was distracting her with his "charm", and had secretly put the car in neutral. He told her to go for it, and molly steps on the gas and we go no where. "Who's all that now?" Rusty's pipes out, probably wondering if he'd ever make it to the airport...alive. Rusty really broke it down, sharing stuff with us, and making us understand things that we probably wouldn't, not given the chance to talk with one who knows. Rusty (as well as Apolo) has always been honest with us, and always make light of hard situations. Even though I told Rusty, "Wow, looked like you had some 'choice words' in today's paper", he gave an evil grin, said that he had read it this morning and something to the effect of "reporters love the negitive..." Molly even got him to sign the article! Talk about trippy.

We drop him off, help him with his things from the trunk, and start shellin' out the goodbye hugs. "You know, I love it when you guy come to the races" he told us. "When am I going to see you all again?" Eh, we'll have to work on that Rus, and hopefully it's before November. He was still talking about the ST gear sweater, and I wasn't sure if I had an extra to give him. Dude, Lupe, being the short track martar that she is, takes the hoodie off her back and gives it to Rusty. "Here, have mine...It's ok, I know where April lives..." she says. "Wow, thanks guys!"

No, Rusty....thank YOU.

No, Apolo....thank YOU.

No, Cleveland....thank YOU.

No, long-ass plane rides home....F-U.

Overall, this trip was a short track learning experience. We really got to know the athletes a bit more this trip, and maybe, just maybe, let them have the chance to feel more comfortable around us. And Todd, I'm SO glad you came to the rink. It's been ages since I saw you last, and it's so important to have you at these competitions...making the die-hards remember where we've come from.

Love ya lots, Cleveland. Just don't be so damn cold next time.
